On one of our walks, Barbara Marx Hubbard told me that Buckminster Fuller had recently told her that he’d had a spiritual experience similar to hers. She said, “Wouldn’t it be wonderful if you could get the two of us together on camera—to tell our stories?” I’d not met Bucky, but I’d read some of his books and knew his reputation as an engineer-philosopher, so I readily agreed, leaving it to Barbara to contact him to see if he would be willing to talk about his spiritual experience on camera.

When Barbara phoned and said Bucky would meet her anywhere for the taping, I was eager to set it up at her house in Washington, D.C., but to have such luminaries in the same room with so few people didn’t seem right. So I asked Barbara if they could come to Cincinnati and have them speak on stage at Xavier University’s largest auditorium. They agreed, so I sent out an announcement to the campus community. I also invited Michael Toms, co-founder of New Dimensions Radio in Los Angeles, to serve as moderator for the program.

And so an all-volunteer team of students and professionals produced an hour-long video called Our Spiritual Experience: A Conversation with Buckminster Fuller and Barbara Marx Hubbard. The auditorium was filled to capacity. Toward the end of the taping Barbara informed Bucky about her latest project, the creation of a “World Good News Network,” and she dedicated it to him. After the taping, as I was removing Bucky’s microphone, he suddenly took hold of my hands. “Young man,” he said, “keep doing what you’re doing. It’s important for the world.” This was Bucky’s last public interview. He died two months later on July 1st—my birthday in 1983.
